A Long Weekend on the Eastern Seaboard: Puducherry and Mahabalipuram
19–22 January 2019 (3 nights / 4 days)

How many places in India will you get a chance to paddle out on a surfboard and yell ‘Surf’s Up!’ with abandon? Not too many, we assure you! But Wonderful World offers you a weekend break with the opportunity to do just that.

Puducherry promises the best surf that India has to offer and we have tied up with Kallialay Surf School for an introductory session with instructors who are the surf pioneers in India. It truly promises to be an exhilarating experience and our surf instructors make surfing look like the most effortless exercise on earth. It’s something you have to try out!

Our itinerary promises to be a fun, relaxed one where you chill out and stay with the surf or move at a slightly more frenetic pace and ‘do Puducherry’.

The choice is yours.

We have picked the perfect time of the year for you to be in ‘Pondi’, as the locals affectionately say. We will stay at a charming 19th century colonial heritage guest house located in the French Quarter.

Puducherry is a city of contradictions. From the firmly traditional saris and dhotis of the Aayyas (grandmas) and the Thathas (grandpas), to the wildly modern café culture of the French, to the bohemian, laid-back approach of the folks at Auroville … there is something for everyone. Everyone has a place, everyone fits in, and somehow there is calm amidst the chaos.

We end the trip with a visit to Mahabalipuram to see the ancient shore temple, the panch rathas, and other rock carvings. If you have any space in your luggage maybe you could indulge in a little shopping at the local leather stores before heading back to Chennai.

Join Wonderful World for an unforgettable holiday to this unforgettable destination.

Day 1
Day 1 – Saturday, 19th January (includes no meals) Chennai – Puducherry
  • Pick up from Chennai airport at 11 a.m. and drive to Puducherry.
  • Lunch en route.
  • Check-in to the hotel by 2.30 p.m. and relax for a bit.
  • Head out for a Pondi Heritage Walk at 4 p.m.
We will cross ‘Le Petit Canel’ (yes, Pondi still has a lot of street names in French, which we find adorable), and take a walk through the historical French Quarter.
  • We will then take a relaxed stroll on one of India’s very few pedestrian-only promenades at twilight. It’s a fun place to relax and sit on the rocks. Take a moment to let your system adjust to a slightly more laid-back pace of life while watching the local inhabitants get to their 10,000 steps in the fresh sea air.
  • Once the stars come out, we will stroll down to have dinner at a little French café before heading back to our heritage hotel, which was built in the 19th century and has oodles of character.

Day 2
Day 2 – Sunday, 20th January (includes breakfast) – Puducherry
  • Wake up early, at 6 a.m., to capture the essence of Puducherry with a sunrise over the water on the Promenade. For those who prefer the luxury of sleeping in, you can do just that.
  • After a leisurely, sumptuous breakfast, we will drive to Auroville, where we will get a chance to see the Visitors’ Centre around 9 a.m. and the gardens at the Matri Mandir.
For the uninitiated, Auroville is a universal town where people of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony. The concept itself boggles the mind, when our world is so fragmented. But the residents of Auroville make it work and it is amazing to experience their world. If anyone would like to go inside the Matri Mandir, we will try and get passes for the next day. These cannot be booked in advance – one has to go to the Visitors’ Centre and try and get them then.
  • Lunch at Auroville.
  • Head back post lunch and visit the Aurobindo Ashram and the shops around the Ashram.
